When perimenopause hit me at 42, it challenged everything I knew as a personal trainer and nutritionist. Despite my background studying under experts like Sebastian Oreb and Dr. Layne Norton, I felt completely unprepared. Every exercise is explained with easy-to-understand cues. There are also technique videos to help you learn how to lift safely. Don’t worry I’ve had 5 children, so I know first-hand how daunting it is to start working out again from scratch – I’ve got you covered.

WHAT ABOUT ADVANCED GYM GOERS?

Don’t worry, it’s for you too. In fact, these are the very programs I follow myself. Each one is 12 weeks long, divided into three 4-week mesocycles with 3 or 4 sessions per week. All sessions are full-body with alternating priority muscle groups. And every week we increase the weight or reps (progressive overload) until we reach the end of a cycle, at which point we de-load and take a rest before starting again. Sessions are only 45 minutes long with a strong emphasis on intensity and lifting relatively heavy. And don’t worry – I’ll give you tips and target reps for every session, so you’ll always know exactly what to do.

What equipment will I need?

For beginners:

For intermediate and advanced:

  • Dumbbells: ideally 2x2 kg, 2x4 kg, 2x6 kg and 2x8 kg to start with (for the lighter stuff just pick up 2 packs of 1kg rice). You can add up as you gain strength and need to increase the weights. Look for Hex dumbbells.
  • A set of mini bands (see above for link)
  • Yellow & red long bands, then eventually black
HOW OFTEN WILL I NEED TO TRAIN?

To get the best results, you should aim to workout at least 3x/week, with an optional 4th day for intermediate and advanced. That’s why each session is 45 minutes or less, so it’s easy to fit into a busy schedule. And you can always add a yoga, meditation or HIIT session if you feel like it (all included in the app).

CAN I MIX HOME AND GYM WORKOUTS?

Yes, all training programs have both a home and gym version. And both versions mirror each other so you can easily toggle from one to the other as long as you select the same workout day (e.g. Day 3 at home and Day 3 in the Gym will both mirror each other and work the exact same muscle groups).
